Not a post, just an important question…

Doing ‘techy stuff’ on Maltaville today and I have a question…

I know the United States has a standard letter size of 8 1/2″ x 11″, but what is the standard printer size paper in the U.K. and Europe? Is it the same as here in Australia and New Zealand which is A4 210mm x 297mm or different again…help please if you can.

Thanks in advance, Margaret :-)

  1. Hi Margaret, yes the standard printer in France is A4.
Thank you for all what you do! Your work is amazing!

    • Thanks Valerie, that helps lots :-)

    • Hi Kerry,
I’m glad you like the quilt and are itching to start too. To date I have drafted 11 blocks and sewn 9 so I am pleased I am on track with my progress.

Yes, the Maltaville Album Quilt was made during the same time frame that making the elaborate Baltimore Album Quilts was in fashion (1840’s and 1850’s) but as it was made in New York it can’t be classed as a Baltimore Album Quilt, and even though it has some very detailed blocks it lacks the typical symbolic blocks found on Baltimore Album Quilts, many of those images are of monuments/buildings and of political/historical interest to Baltimore.
To me some blocks are quite naive and folk art in style…it has so much charm doesn’t it.
All the interest is spurring me on so thanks for leaving a comment.
      Margaret.
PS I’ve drafted and sewn the Cross block, looks good if I do say so myself LOL

  2. Hi Margaret, A4 here in the UK – 210×297.
I am going to love seeing this quilt come to life.

  3. Hi Margaret – A4 is what was used in Germany when we were there and I noticed stuff I recived from the UK was also on A4, so I think you are pretty safe. I am loving the pics on the blog and I find the whole process very exciting to be keeping tabs on. xxx Andrea

  4. A4 is standard here in the UK at the moment Margaret.

  5. Thanks Margaret
I went to quiltsmith and purchased some background fabric that i just love. its an old P&B range and is a subtle cream soft chocolate stripe. But not quite enough. I hope to track down more or do a mix and match style. Thanks for info on the quilt. I can see now it was not a cross. I looked at the quilt online and had a closer look at the blocks. Its a charmer. You have done so much work. I am drafting blocks from the book quilting traditions. I am now up to block three. It takes time to do draft, and then sew. Thanks Margaret, you are very kind and your blog is so enjoyable. Look forward to more. I see you are teaching the Nebraska Basket quilt later in the year at Threadbear. Hope your class is full of lovely ladies. Cheers Kerry in Sydney

  6. Julie-Anne says:

There is a good summary of paper sizes on Wikipedia @ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paper_size including a list of some of the countries (there are at least 88) which use the international standard of A3, A4, A5 etc

  7. Hello Margaret,

I’m visiting you here through Michelle’s blog: Betwixt the betweens. I hope it is helpfull if I tell you that we, in the Netherlands also have the same standard paper size as in Australia. I’m not sure if I can join when you start the BOM but I’m very curious about your applique quilt.
I am very interested in old applique quilts.
