Red and White ~ a Schoolhouse and some Stars

Do you have a quilt that you’ve always wanted to make…or more likely… several?

One of my perennial favourites is the schoolhouse quilt.

This one belongs to my very good friend Judy, it hangs in her workroom and I enjoy it every time I see it.

Judy's Quilt.

Judy used all (what I call) modern fabrics, there’s not a repro to be seen in this quilt but I love the look of it…it’s so crisp and fresh looking.

I have loved looking at Taryn’s virtual exhibition of Red and White Quilts and it still has a little while to go.   I will add this lovely Red and White of Judy’s to the display.

I know many of you are heading to this Exhibition at the American Folk Art Museum in New York, and I wish you all bon voyage.  I look forward to hearing and seeing all about it on your blogs in the coming weeks.

I managed to get some of my Red and White Ohio Star blocks made on the Saturday before last.  I must be getting inspired by all the terrific Red and White quilts I’m seeing.

I am making this for the Vic Quilters Showcase in July, a section of that annual exhibition will feature my local quilt group ~ The Goldfields Quilters.

The reverse applique circle is my own variation, just to lighten up the look of the block a little.

I have quite a few yet to make but spent a half day doing lots of precutting so when I have a day I can jsu sew, sew, sew.

2 blocks per pack

I am working my way through my stash of 19th Century reds,  each pack has enough for two blocks and I’ve still got  more to cut.

It’s been a trip down memory lane with some of the fabrics I can tell you.

Til soon…

  2. Love that house block quilt. I don’t know if I’ve ever seen or noticed one with the positive and negative use of fabrics before. That would be a good workshop at Goldfields, Margaret! ;-)

  3. I totally get why you love the red/white schoolhouse quilt… it’s gorgeous!

  4. Classic patterns look so good in contemporary fabrics and that house quilt is no exception. They have energy. Thanks for adding it to the virtual exhibition. I like the circles you are putting into the stars. They remind me of the 19th century signature blocks. I also love your organizational method. I have a few small plastic bags of house parts and it has inspired me to pull them out.

  5. so organised – just love looking at all those little packages!

    THE QUILT THAT JUDY MADE
I’ve made my last quilt for someone else (so I say today). All children and grandchildren and two great granddaughters have their own quilts. Hubby has one and cousin Margaret got my very first one and a few friends here and there. Now, I want to make one for myself. I’ve made everything from a log cabin to a lone star and oodles in between. What my heart wants, though, is a SCHOOLHOUSE quilt. The classic, two-chimney, two-window, one-door version. Now, I see there are an awful lot of variations on this ‘simple’ theme as well. The width of fabric between the front and side of the house goes from zero to quite wide. The door is either bottomless or has a bottom. The house may be square or elongated one way or the other and to top everything else off, the houses are either separated or stitched immediately together, side-by-side like row houses. Whoever knew I’d be faced with this myriad of decisions? (My major problem is making a decision faced with so MANY possibilities!) The positive/negative red and white schoolhouse quilt I came across on Pinterest caught my eye. It’s quite beautiful. I notice posts from 2011 but none since that year, so perhaps this will go nowhere, will never be read. I may be putting a letter in a bottle! In the meantime, I’ll be drafting my own paper-pieced version combining the features I like best, inserting the occasional paper-pieced tree block and perhaps some appliqued flowers………………..to whom it may concern.
